Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki MP will deliver funding to install air-conditioning at Darling Heights State School where special needs students swelter through summer.

Mr Janetzki has been working with concerned parents and schooling community since last summer after Special Education Program students were sitting in classrooms while temperatures reached up to 40 degrees.

“I have secured $10,000 funding under an LNP government to provide to the P&C for the installation of air-conditioning units in classrooms at Darling Heights State School,” Mr Janetzki said.

“Students are suffering in summer. I sat alongside students during the heatwave and it is difficult to concentrate,” he said.

“This funding promise will deliver a better learning environment for students.”

Darling Heights State School P&C President and mother-of-three Cate MacAvoy welcomed the funding announcement.

“All our fundraising for the last couple of years - bake sales, craft stalls, discos, catering and fun runs - have gone towards slowly installing air-conditioning one block of classrooms at a time,” Mrs MacAvoy said.

“This funding will be a tremendous help,” she said.

Research has shown that reading comprehension starts to diminish at 28 degrees and the brain goes into survival mode at 30 degrees.

Currently, the Department of Education and Training funds air-conditioning for schools in the Cooler School Zone but that does not include Toowoomba.
