Garden City locals are being encouraged to put on a helmet and ditch the car for the rest of the week.

It's Bike Week across the state and Toowoomba Council wants us to do our part.

Toowoomba Region will celebrate Bike Week, which kicked off April 28, and runs to May 7 with two Bike-Ability workshops and launching the new Bike Buddies program.

Bike Week is an annual cycling festival that offers a packed schedule of events to pedal the message of getting people cycling more often.

Environment and Community portfolio leader Cr Joe Ramia said Bike Week encourages people to live out a healthy and active lifestyle through cycling.

“The activities held in Toowoomba for Bike Week are aimed at improving skills and confidence to ride more,” Cr Ramia said.

“It’s not only great for physical and mental health, but it’s also great for the environment to leave the car at home and hop on the pedals.

“That’s why we’d love to see as many people as possible feeling capable and confident to ride their bike.”

“There will be two Bike-Ability workshops at Groom Park; the first held on Saturday April 28 and the second on Sunday May 6 – from 9am to 1.30pm.

“These workshops will develop riders’ cycling skills and help them feel more confident on their bike.
