AGL Energy customers are advised to take a good look at their next bill before opening their wallets, with a scam currently circulating which is trying to trick customers.

The energy provider tweeted about an hoax email scam doing the rounds, with the emails deemed to be a phishing attack, trying to get people to click on a link and unwittingly download malicious software onto their device.

This gives the attacker access to their computer and personal information, with concern that the receiver of the email may also make illegitimate payments for fake 'outstanding' bills.

Anyone who receives an email is urged to check the email address before clicking on any links inside, as fraudulent email addresses normally have a recognisable difference to legitimate company email accounts.
