The depths of winter might be suited to ice skating, but Toowoomba Regional Council’s (TRC) garden crews and Carnival organising team are busy ensuring every detail is in order for the 69th Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers from September 21-30.

TRC Tourism and Events portfolio leader Cr Geoff McDonald said Council’s garden crews were close to completing the final plantings that would provide the centrepiece floral displays at the city’s major civic parks.

Cr McDonald said this year’s brilliant blooms would be matched by the beaming smiles and informative tips from the Carnival of Flowers volunteer greeters.

“Greeters will wander selected streets and civic parks or join organised tours to offer special tips or advice about Carnival events and venues,” Cr McDonald said.

“This personalised service is sure to help visitors plan their days and maximise their enjoyment.”

TRC Parks and Recreations Service Portfolio Leader Cr Joe Ramia said Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers planning happens throughout the year with Nursery staff ordering and preparing stock while garden bed designs happen in the months after each Carnival.

“This year around 54,500 seedlings and bulbs will bloom in Queens Park alone.

“In the past week Council’s garden crews have finalised planting snapdragons, varieties of pansies and bellis or English daisies.

“The final selection of bulbs will be planted in the coming week or so,” Cr Ramia said.

“Around 11,000 tulips have been planted at Laurel Bank Park with more than 62,000 seedlings used in the park’s signature design garden. The design will be revealed when the blooms appear.

“The park will feature a wide variety of annuals, perennials and bulbs with 20 baskets of flowers. The regular topiary, which is on display all year, also adds a structured element to the riot of colour.”
