Chantelle Lee Newbery has gone from winning Gold at the Olympics to fronting a Toowoomba court for stealing.

The athlete first made headlines when she competed at the Athens Olympics in 2004 becoming the first Australian female to win ‘gold’ in diving in over 80 years.

Since then the 45-year-old has taken a big dive - finding herself on the wrong side of the law, on more than one occasion.

In 2014 the gold medalist had her home raided by police where they discovered methamphetamine's and used syringes.  She fronted court where she plead guilty to possessing drugs and syringes with the court placing Newbery on a drug diversion program, but did not record a conviction. Newbery was also fined $300 for breaching bail after failing to turn up at an earlier appearance.

Newbery appeared before Toowoomba Magistrates court yesterday pleading guilty to failing to appear in court not once but twice before and stealing charges.

The charges stem from September 26 when Newbery was caught stealing from several stores with a total of more than $1000.

Newbery was handed a wholly suspended three-month sentence and will be required to report to the Toowoomba Police Station once a week to fulfil her parole requirements.
