Health Service Celebrates ‘deadly’ Women as part of NAIDOC Week

Kicking off today this week will celebrate the extraordinary work of local women working in health care will be celebrated as part of this year’s Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service’s NAIDOC events.

Themed, “Because of Her, We Can”, the celebrations will shine a spotlight on the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women working to improve the health and wellbeing of their communities.

Events will be held in 23 different locations across the DDHHS from 4 July to 20 July.

“This year’s theme focuses on the roles Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played, and continue to play, at community, local, state and national levels,” DDHHS Executive Director Medical Services Dr Martin Byrne said.

“As leaders, trailblazers, politicians, activists and social change advocates, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have fought and continue to fight, for justice, equal rights, rights to country, for law and justice, access to education, employment and to maintain and celebrate Indigenous culture, language, music and art.

“Here at the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service, more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women than ever before are working in our hospitals, aged-care facilities and in corporate or support roles.”

Dr Byrne said it was a great opportunity for hospitals to showcase their facilities to the local community, while celebrating an important national event.

“The aim of the NAIDOC week events is to encourage community members to visit their local hospital or health service, breaking down the barriers which may ordinarily stop them from accessing health services in their time of need,” he said.

“This year’s theme has also allowed the health service to celebrate some extraordinary women who work for us and are making a positive difference to the health and wellbeing of their communities.”
