The federal government is expected to announce the final Queensland leg of the Inland Rail project today.

The Chronicle reports that the rail will run through Pittsworth and Brookstead before linking up to the Wellcamp-Charlton prize hub area.

Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Darren Chester says the route was chosen because it primarily uses existing transport corridors and is significantly more economical.

The final rail route will be subject to extensive planning and approvals process.

The rail project is part of an $8.4 billion spend that was announced in the federal budget.
