Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Nancy Sommerfield has urged Toowoomba Region residents to keep faith with their yellow bins.

Cr Sommerfield said that despite recent reports of Ipswich City Council ending its recycling service, this will not be the case for the Toowoomba Region.

“Recycled waste from Toowoomba Regional Council areas continues to be recycled and is not being put into landfill”

“China’s refusal to take Australian recycling waste exports has put huge pressure on the domestic system; however, at this point it has not affected our waste removal contracts.

“Council has been in regular contact with our domestic waste contractors since this became an issue some months ago and at this point Toowoomba Region will continue its recycling program as per normal.

“Kerbside recycling amounts to more than 11,000 tonnes of material per year and it would be irresponsible to take this out of the recycling program, Cr Sommerfield said.
