Toowoomba Police have charged a 55-year-old Plainland man with animal cruelty after they rescued a dog from a locked vehicle yesterday.

At about 10.40am police were called out to Margaret Street after they received reports that a dog had been left unattended in a car.

Police noticed that the windows of the vehicle had been left halfway down and a Labrador in the rear seat footwell.

The dog was showing visible signs of heat stress; panting heavily and drooling excessively, and when removed from the vehicle officers noted the dog’s body was very hot to touch.

Attending officers also reported the air inside the vehicle was extremely hot when they placed their arms inside to unlock the doors.

A man returned to the vehicle where he was arrested and later charged in relation to offences of animal cruelty. The man is to appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on March 13.

The dog was provided water at the scene and was transported back to the Toowoomba Station where it was then placed in the care of the RSPCA.
