Women in Highfields who are eligible for a breast screen are encouraged to take advantage of a new shuttle bus service.

The free bus service will operate between Highfields and the BreastScreen Queensland Toowoomba service located at 661 Ruthven Street.

Health promotion officer Alexandra Robbins-Hill said the introduction of the shuttle bus was aimed at encouraging more women aged 40 years and over to have regular breast screens.

“It is important for women aged 50 to 74 to come for a breast screen, and then have another breast screen every two years,” Ms Robbins-Hill said.

“Women over the age of 40 and women over the age of 75 are also still eligible for a free breast screen.

“The shuttle bus is one way that we can help eligible women living in Toowoomba’s outskirts keep on top of their vital health checks.”

Ms Robbins-Hill said one in eight Queensland women would develop breast cancer.

“There are around 15,000 women who are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and of those, more than 90 per cent have no family history of the illness,” she said.

“A breast screen every two years is the best way to detect breast cancer early, well before you or your doctor can feel anything.”
