More than 100 staff from Queensland Police Service and the Department of Transport and Main Roads will take part in Operation Quebec Smoke.

Operation Quebec Smoke kicked off yesterday, it is designed to raise awareness of the ‘Fatal Five’, particularly leading into the spring holiday period, a period where significant numbers of crashes occur.

The Fatal Five – drink driving and drug driving, fatigue, inattention, seat belt use and speeding – are the most common killers on Queensland roads.

Police will conduct mobile patrols, establish Random Breath Testing and drug testing sites and will deploy speed cameras and Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology throughout the district.

“The goal of this operation is to educate the public and get them thinking about the Fatal Five during a busy period on our roads,” Inspector Sharee Cumming, Darling Downs District said.

“We want to minimise trauma on our roads and raise awareness through enforcement and education whilst also detecting and deterring who break the law

“Ask any emergency service who has attended a fatal traffic crash or had to speak to the family of someone who has been seriously injured on our roads and they will tell you how important our road rules are.”

189 people have died on Queensland Roads, of those, 10 have died on roads in the Darling Downs District, three more than last year.
