MORE than 1200 concerned residents have signed a petition demanding the state government address the dangerous situation at the intersection of Ruthven and Donahue streets.

Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki has been meeting with Willow Glen Retirement Community residents shaken by multiple near misses and at least one accident.

“This intersection is a major safety issue for nearby residents, parents of children who attend the childcare centre next door, McDonald’s and Red Rooster customers, and customers of the many other small businesses in the neighbouring shopping complex,” Mr Janetzki said.

Residents’ committee president Elizabeth Grace presented the petition containing 1153 signatures to Mr Janetzki today. These signatures were in addition to the 92 collected via an e-petition bringing the total to 1245.

“I was really pleased the way everyone responded to our petition,” Mrs Grace said.

“There was another near-miss at the intersection just after we started collecting signatures. It is very dangerous to turn right from Donahue Street onto Ruthven Street,” she said.

Mr Janetzki said six crashes had been reported to police which occurred on Ruthven Street, between Alderley and Stenner Streets, in the past 12 months.

“We also see a lot of children running from the sporting ovals at Nell E Robinson Park across all four lanes of Ruthven Street to reach McDonald’s,” Mr Janetzki said.

“A new set of traffic lights would provide pedestrians with a safe place to cross this busy section of Ruthven Street,” he said.

Residents said they had raised their concerns multiple times over the past few years with both council and Main Roads, both which claimed the other was responsible for the issue.

Mr Janetzki will table the paper petition in parliament at a future sitting.

He will also present the petition to Toowoomba Regional Council, the State Government and Federal Government for consideration.
