Detectives are investigating a suspicious fire at a Darling Downs child care centre yesterday.

Officers were called to Rudd Street in Drayton around 1:15pm, after reports a fire had been located by staff in a storeroom.

41 children and 9 staff members had been safely evacuated by the time police arrived, no one was injured.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Service officers extinguished the flames and damage was contained to the store room.

Preliminary information indicates that a second fire had been extinguished at the opposite end of the building prior to police and emergency services arriving suggesting it may have been deliberately lit.

A crime scene was established with scenes of crime, forensic officers and investigators attending.

Investigations are continuing to determine the cause of the fire.
