Refugee Week exists to celebrate the valued contributions refugees make to Australian society.

The Multicultural Development Australia (MDA) are hosting two events at Grand Central to celebrate Refugee Week on Monday June 18 and Saturday June 23.

Kelly Buckingham, Regional Manager MDA South West Region, said these events will acknowledge refugee survival, courage and hope and showcase the many cultures throughout Toowoomba and their significant contributions.  She said it would also be a great opportunity for people to meet some of our newest residents of Toowoomba.

On Monday the 18th MDA will be hosting a morning tea from 10:30am until 12:30pm.  Members of the Toowoomba community are welcome to attend and sample some delicious treats from places like Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq,” she said.

“While there listen to some of the experiences of local refugees and hear their stories of hope, survival and courage.”

On Saturday June 23, MDA will hold a Multicultural Market Day where members of the public can again interact with refugees from a diversity of cultures.  Stalls will include bright African clothing and various food stalls from around the world.  All proceeds raised will go towards building enterprise skills and resources for community groups in preparation for the iconic Toowoomba Languages and Cultural Festival on August 12.

“There will be good food, good people, good music and the possibility of some excellent dancing is pretty good as well,” Ms Buckingham said.

“Stalls will be open from 9am and we will finish around 4pm.”
