WILLOW Glen Retirement Community residents are busy collecting signatures for a petition to address the dangerous situation at the intersection of Ruthven and Donahue Streets.

Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki has been meeting with residents who have been shaken by multiple near misses and at least one accident.

Mr Janetzki said six crashes had been reported to police which occurred on Ruthven Street, between Alderley and Stenner Streets, in the past 12 months.

Residents’ committee president Elizabeth Grace said the intersection was a major safety issue for residents, parents of children who attend the childcare centre next door, McDonald’s and Red Rooster customers, and customers of the many other small businesses in the neighbouring shopping complex.

“It can be very dangerous to turn right from Donahue onto Ruthven Street,” Mrs Grace said.

“Many drivers also use the intersection to perform u-turns which has resulted in at least one accident involving a Willow Glen resident,” she said.

Mr Janetzki said Willow Glen residents were collecting signatures to petition for the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Ruthven and Donahue Streets.

“We also see a lot of children running from the sporting ovals at Nell E Robinson Park across all four lanes of Ruthven Street to reach McDonald’s,” Mr Janetzki said.

“A new set of traffic lights would provide pedestrians with a safe place to cross this busy section of Ruthven Street,” he said.

Residents said they had raised their concerns multiple times over the past few years with both council and Main Roads, both which claimed the other was responsible for the issue.

Members of the public can sign the petition at Willow Glen Retirement Community.
