Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki MP and Fraser RV owner David Fraser discuss the unfairness of a new tax which will add thousands of dollars to the cost of motorhomes and campervans

Hardworking Toowoomba retirees ready to enjoy the grey nomad lifestyle will be slugged thousands of dollars extra tax on motorhomes and campervans from July 1.

Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki MP said the State Government had unfairly included motorhomes and campervans in its new 2% duty tax on value of “luxury” vehicles over $100,000.

“Many of these people have worked hard their whole lives to afford a motorhome or some have sold their houses to fund the purchase of a motorhome/campervan,” Mr Janetzki said.

“These are not luxury items. This is a sneaky tax that people in the industry are only finding out about now,” he said.

Toowoomba’s Fraser RV owner David Fraser said the State Government had kept the tax under the radar and it would have a big impact on buyers.

“Most of our motorhome customers are retirees and unfortunately it’s going to hit them pretty hard,” Mr Fraser said.

“It will add thousands of dollars to the purchase price and this extra tax will also affect those purchasing second-hand motorhomes as well,” he said.

Mr Janetzki said caravanning industry groups were concerned the tax could have an impact on the regional tourism market.

“These retirees have worked hard and paid taxes their whole lives and now their dreams are being taxed too,” he said.
