Stripes for Stroke Awareness Week

Friday Stripes Day

National Stroke Week kicked off on Monday and will run through to Sunday 10th September.

Queensland Health reveals that 364 locals have been admitted to hospital in past year due to stroke.

We are being asked to wear stripes this Friday in support of Stroke Awareness Week and to make a donation going towards Stroke research.

Over $130,000 has been raised so far which will fund the Griffith University peri-spinal atenacept clincial trials.

Stroke Recovery Trial Fund Director Doctor Coralie Graham says there are ways we can limit our risk of stroke:

“This year we have a “Stripes for Stroke’ theme.  We are encouraging people to get stripey and wear stripes to work on Friday.  It could be a shirt, pants or even stripe fingernails, whatever you want to wear for a day.

The idea is to get people talking about stroke, how to recognise the signs of stroke which is really, really important.”

This National Stroke Week, the Stroke Foundation is aiming to ensure every Australian household has someone who knows the signs of stroke and to call 000.

Share the F.A.S.T. signs of stroke with your friends, family and colleagues - the life you save could be your own.

Just by knowing the signs of stroke makes you part of the F.A.S.T. Response Team:

 Face - Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
 Arms - Can they lift both arms?
 Speech - Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
 Time - Time is critical. If you see any of these symptoms Act FAST and call 000

Time is critical in treating stroke. Paramedics, nurses and doctors can only help if you join the FAST Response Team and dial 000 at the first sign of stroke. Stroke is always a medical emergency.
