Nearly 60 people have signed up for a new program aimed at teaching non-English speaking people about water safety. The inaugural Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Swim Safely program will be hosted by Downs Little Lifeguard Club at Milne Bay Aquatic Centre on Saturday the 23rd June.

Toowoomba Regional Council Community Development and Facilities Chair Cr Geoff McDonald said water safety is important for everyone and this new program will teach basic water survival skills.

“Research indicates that mothers in our multi-cultural communities are the primary teachers and this program targets adults and children 10 years and over to learn basic swimming and water safety and survival techniques,” Cr McDonald said.

“The intention of the course is to introduce participants to aquatic activities in the relatively safe and calm waters of a swimming pool to develop confidence in the water.

“The skills learnt would also be further developed though application in a ‘wave’ pool setting to simulate a natural waterway experience.

“Further opportunities may arise from this initial program and provide valuable information in this area of need for the future.”
