Toowoomba Regional Council has unanimously agreed to donate $10,000 to the ‘Darling Downs and Toowoomba East Rotary Takatsuki Relief Appeal’

The appeal launched by the Rotary Club of East Toowoomba in partnership with TRC will raise much-needed funds for the Region’s Sister City Takatsuki in the wake of the recent earthquake and flooding rain.

TRC Mayor Paul Antonio who was unable to attend the meeting welcomed the support of the Council for the people of Takatsuki and the involvement of Rotary in setting up the relief appeal.

“Our Sister City relationship with Takatsuki stretches back 26 years and during that time, we have developed strong ties with the people of the region.

“In June of this year, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 hit the area around Osaka, Japan killing three people including a nine-year-old girl at her school in Takatsuki.

“Many areas throughout Japan, including Takatsuki city, have received record-breaking heavy rain which has forced further evacuations, Mayor Antonio said.

“Our community has already shared a strong bond during times of disaster.  The City of Takatsuki donated $30,000 to our own disaster appeal following the 2011 floods that hit our Toowoomba Region.

“We stand with Takatsuki and I encourage the Toowoomba Region to support Takatsuki during their time of need.”

Deputy Mayor Cr Carol Taylor who chaired the meeting said Council unanimously supported contributing $10,000 to the people of the Takatsuki.

“This terrible disaster in our Sister City has touched our hearts, particularly with the news of the death of the 9 year old school girl.

“We hope that this contribution will go some way towards rebuilding the lives of those in need.
