Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) has formed a partnership with the Rotary Club of Toowoomba East to launch the ‘Darling Downs and Toowoomba East Rotary Takatsuki Relief Appeal’.  The appeal will raise much needed funds for the Region’s Sister City Takatsuki in the wake of the recent earthquake and flooding rain.

TRC Mayor Paul Antonio said the people of Takatsuki have had a tough time and I would encourage our community to get behind efforts to help our sister city in their time of need.

“In June of this year, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 hit the area around Osaka, Japan killing three people including a nine-year-old girl at her school in Takatsuki.

“Council has been in contact with the City of Takatsuki and the clean-up from the earthquake is still underway, Mayor Antonio said.

“Many areas throughout Japan, including Takatsuki city, have received record-breaking heavy rain which has forced further evacuations.”

Rotary District Drought Relief Committee Chair Phillip Charles said the Rotary Club of Toowoomba East will be working with its Sister Rotary Club in Takatsuki to direct any funds raised to where it is most needed.

Current President of the Rotary Club of Toowoomba East Roger Klaassen said the club has kicked off the appeal with a donation of $1,000.

“The community of Takatsuki has supported our region in our time of need during the devastating floods and this is our opportunity to return the gesture”, Mr Klaassen said.

“People can make a donation to the appeal through the Rotary Australia World Community Service website and there will also be a link on our club’s website.”

Mayor Antonio said our Sister City relationship with Takatsuki stretches back 26 years and during that time, we have developed strong ties with the people of the region.
