Police are investigating an incident where a woman tried to set her car alight after she hit a road sign on the Warrego Highway.

The incident happened in the early hours of yesterday morning on the highway east of Chinchilla.

Initial calls to emergency services made around 1:15am reported that a woman had been driving the car when it hit a sign on the side of the Warrego Highway.

A number of small fires had broken out at the scene when police and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services arrived.

Initial investigations indicated fuel and oil had been splashed over the car, and a number of small fires had spread into the surrounding grassland, which firefighters extinguished within minutes.

The woman had fled the scene before officers arrived, it appeared that the woman had not sustained any injuries in the single vehicle-accident.

Police are continuing their investigations.
