As we approach the harsh throws of winter, it is easy for our pessimism to overtake us, which can affect our personal and work lives. Despite the pronounced Esperance freeze there is cause to be optimistic surrounding local business in Esperance, according to the WA Chamber of Commerce, with recent statistics highlighting confidence around town.

A survey conducted between January and March revealed that short-term business confidence is the highest it has been in seven years, with two out of five business looking to increase their staff in the next quarter and 90% certain that the WA economy, as a whole, will not subside.

 Two thirds of Esperance business owner believe they will not incur more debt next financial year and 64% are expecting stable investment levels.

Kylie Ryan, the CEO of the Chamber of Commerce in Esperance, wants your input to confirm these preliminary stats and then to build on the challenges sited by the overarching state Chamber of Commerce. They stated the following obstacles per industry for regional business:

  • 58 % of manufacturing are seeing an increase in competitors, foreign and online
  • 63 % of retail are seeing rising operational costs
  • 56 % of construction are seeing an increase in competitors, foreign and online
  • 58 % of mining are crying out for more skilled labour, apprentices and professionals
  • 67% of wholesalers are seeing rising operational costs
  • 60% of professional services are claiming there’s weak demand for their services
