November 3 at the Esperance Civic centre is a night to celebrate all the great players, coaches, teams and volunteers that have contributed to the sports and winter seasons of sports across Esperance. The nominations have been received, the finalists have been announced and here they are!

The Horizon Power Sports Star of the Year will be chosen from the following outstanding list of finalists: Brendon White (football), Raymond Hurley (rifle shooting), Tenique Tucker (netball), and Alli McArthur (hockey).

Often a category that is avoided by sportspeople across the town, The Shire of Esperance Veteran Sports Star of the Year will be selected from these famous faces: Corey Bennier (football), Kathleen Donovan (surf lifesaving), Marc Payne (motocross) and Des Neale (clay target shooting).

The night is also a celebration of our up and coming talent. The Telstra, Junior Sports Star of the Year awards features our aspiring talent, again some famous Esperance names carrying on the family tutelage: Rhys Wood (football), Tom Tate (fishing), Ben Murgatroyd (swimming), Frankie Kennedy (netball), Cian Wicker (ultimate frisbee), Lachlan Newman (football), Sophie Walker (little athletics), Jacob Wagenknecht (cricket), Rhal Selway (motocross), William Wildberger (tennis), Luke Greatrex (tennis), Rydn Rea-Anothnysz (soccer) and Zoe Maccan (running). The long list of finalists demonstrates the breadth of talent that the town has to offer.

The highly coveted Department of Sport and Recreation, Team of the Year category has five finalists: Gibson Football Club Senior teams, Esperance Sharks volleyball team, Esperance Netball Association team, Esperance Sea Dragons swimming team and South East Coastal Bowling league.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of country sport, without them and the sacrifice they make none of the great sporting achievements would be possible. That's why it is so important to acknowledge and support all the work they have done.  This year we have four Esperance Volunteer Resource Centre, Volunteer Service to Sport nominations and they include Cameron Willsher (motocross), Rebecca Cole (netball), Don Murray (sailing) and David Greatrex (tennis). There is no outright winner in this category because as far as making sport happen they are all winners.

All of the finalists will be celebrated on the night, Saturday November 3 at the Esperance Civic Centre. There will also be a sports quiz, door prize, and an auction that will run throughout the night.

Nominees can expect complimentary tickets in the mail over the next few days. For clubs, family and friends, tickets include a 3-course meal for $70 with a $35 option for children on the Saltwater catering menu and are available at Rigney and Associates on Windich Street. Contact Shane Tobin on 0418 557 397 for more info.
