Round Four in the local Esperance District Footy League was Belt up round, promoting safe driving on our country roads, and the two games provided no surprises for the diehards talking about the results around Dempster Street.

Both league games negotiated the lights with the later starting time of 415, at Gibson and Esperance ovals.

The Bulldogs started well and were consistent with their scoring, at least six goals in each quarter, finishing the game at 26.13.169. Reece Griffiths dominated forward with 13 goals, with minor contributions from Symonds, White and Bourne, who is returning to the Esperance team after a brief stint in Perth playing WAFL for the Demons. Roger Parson’s was solid for the Dogs taking the belt up ball.

Ports kicked three goals for the game for a total of 3.5.23, three singles from Wykes, Watson and Clinch. Liddelow continued his impressive form again in the midfield, toiling hard and collecting possessions while Watson and Curnow were also solid across the ground. A lack of experience was telling however, with Esperance too strong.

At Gibson, Jamie Matthews cleared 30 goals for the season with nine for the game, as he proved to be too strong for the Newtown-Condi defenders. Gibson kicked the first and the Lions responded almost immediately, which sent a scare through the Tigers team. The boys from Gibson were too fit and clean around the contest, as they piled on the goals to outscore Newtown-Condingup in every quarter, with the final score ending up 22.11.143 to 3.4.22.

Whiting moved back for the Tigers with an impressive running, rebound game and George Bunge was prolific in the midfield. The Lions toiled hard, especially with a spirited third quarter, with Cruttendon, Burnett and Henderson providing a mixture of grunt and class around the ground.

Next week sees two interesting games. A top of the table clash between the Tigers and the Bulldogs out at Gibson will be telling with Esperance welcoming back class that wasn’t there last time the two teams met and Gibson to miss key personnel Wohling and McAllister. Ports and Newtown-Condi will be a fierce contest, with Ports desperate to open their account this year and the Lions wanting to continue their solid form and make it two wins for the year.
