Round Nine in the Esperance District Football league had both the favourites win but in completely unexpected ways! It all added to the excitement.

Gibson bounced back with a less than convincing win against Ports at Gibson Oval, with a final margin of 56 points, Gibson 11-3-79 to 3-5-23. Late goals to the Tigers inflated the result, with the game more competitive and tougher than the scoreboard revealed.

Both teams started furiously, with each Tigers and Ports defence under attack constantly in a free flowing spectacle. Gibson finished the quarter on top, two-goals to two points, with their makeshift ruckman, Sam Melican, dominating the ruck and moving fluently across the oval. Ports Johnston and Curnow were incredibly in the backline, setting the Ports midfield up brilliant.

Gibson kept chipping away in the second term, kicking four goals and keeping the away side scoreless. Despite the class in the Ports backline and their sublime chipping game kicking out of defence, the mids never seemed to get any real promising forward entries, making it difficult for the likes of Modridge and co. Jake Graham’s class shone through the second quarter and the Tigers went into the main break 39 points better than their opponents.

After half time, things got very interesting.

Ports relentless pressure forced Gibson into mistakes, and the away side won the third quarter. They kicked three goals to one, two to Mogridge, to draw to four goals of the home side, certainly making the natives nervous.

Bridge was instrumental in the last quarter for Gibson, firing up the midfield with his voice and attack, and directing the play. Whiting played is part kicking an important long goal as the Tigers steadied and kicked four goals to none in the final term.

For Ports Zac Liddlelow continued his strong form with another hard running game, his team’s best on ground. Gibson was happy to have George Bungey returning from an extended leave of sickness to dominate in patches. Jake Graham was best afield for the home side with four goals and a calm, composed head settling the Tigers on a number of occasions.

Special mentions have to go to first gamers Pat Quinlivan and Matt Rogers, who were sublimely skilled and further proof from across the teams that the future was bright for the league.

At Newtown, the reigning premiers dominated the first quarter, thanks to a five-goal blitz from Brendon White, to blow Newtown-Condingup out of the game before quarter time. The Lions will rue the sluggish start, conceding eight goals to one in the first term, after finishing the game full of running and a five-goal surge in the final quarter.

White finished the game on ten goals, and Bennell score five. Kirkup and Bourne proved that it was ‘No Parsons, no worries’ picking up the slack left after the Bulldogs skipper went down to a knee injury the weekend before, and having dominant games.

For the home side De Beer and Henderson kicked two apiece and Wickstein toiled hard all game.

Final result, Newtown-Condingup 7-7-49 defeated by the Esperance Bulldogs 23-11-149.
