A shark warning has been issued for Wylie Bay, east of Esperance, following two reported sightings of sharks near Kelp beds in the last 48 hours.

Thursday morning, one unknown sized white shark was sighted at Kelp beds and then in the afternoon a 3.5 metre shark was sighted at Lion Island.

There is a chance of more sightings and the likelihood of encountering a shark has heightened.

Local Government rangers and the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions have erected warning signs on Wylie bay access points advising of the recent shark activity.

People are being advised to take extra caution in the Wylie Bay area and to obey any beach closures that may be put in place by Local Goverment Rangers or Surf Life Saving WA.

If you do see a shark, contact Water Police on 9442 8600.

Fisheries officers will continue to monitor the situation.
