The State of the Goldfields?

chasing exclusion from WA

Article heading image for The State of the Goldfields?

Have you ever wondered if the Goldfields could survive separate to Western Australia proper? It certainly would mean that the area wouldn't be affected by the government siphoning money back into big city centres like Bunbury and Perth.

Well in the 1890's the 'Goldfields National League' pushed for separation from WA, convinced that the region could survive on the back of strong revenues from the resources sector. They even drew up a proposed boundary for the region. See the main image above.

The Esperance port would then be the primary asset for the region exporting mined goods.

Kalgoorlie would be the proposed capital.

How do you think the region would go if it weren't governed by the politicians in Perth?
