Huge events completed and coming up

The AFL may be struggling with its commitment to the AFLW, with the possible announcement of fewer games for women at the top level, but the opposite is true at the grass roots, including Esperance, who are currently experience a flourishing of footy for the girls.

This was clearly evident last Wednesday when 41 girls turned up for a training session with former Eagles stars Drew Petrie and Bradd Dalziel down at Newtown Oval under lights. It is a huge turnout for the Esperance Women’s team who have struggled at times with the winter chill to attract numbers to the track. The ex-AFL stars put the girls through their paces, with a mixture of basic skills focusing on technique to more complicated and strenuous drills that tested the fitness and resolve of the players.

Coach Sam Crawford and Captain Shan Brooke were delighted with the session and the enthusiasm shown by the players and are hoping this momentum will carry forward to this Friday evening, where an inaugural Women’s football match will be taking place this Friday, again at Newtown Oval under lights. The game will start at 530pm with an food, refreshments and an open bar. The pair are hoping this gets written into the Esperance District League Grand Final week schedule, and becomes a permanent fixture.

Later in October, another round robin competition will be coming to Esperance, with women’s teams from Albany and Kalgoorlie taking it up to our local heroines.

If you would like to get involved with the Esperance women’s team  please contact Shan at the Esperance Women’s Footy team on Facebook.
