Woolworths Esperance may be one of many supermarkets across the country that will prematurely stop using plastic shopping bags (or single-use bags) ahead of the nationwide ban, which comes into effect on July 1.

Woolworths have already banned plastic bags from 12 of its stores around Australia, its biggest rival Coles have also begun phasing out single-use bags at four stores.

Banning the bags prior to the official date was planned to assess the reaction from customers, and then to mitigate against the risk of angering shoppers.

The Woolworths Group who made the announcement the bags would disappear in July 2017, are offering shoppers reusable bags to make up for the lack of single-use bags. The cost of these bags will vary from 15 cents to $2. Woolworths and i’s constituent business’s give out more than 3.2 billion bags to customers a year.
