Would you pay an extra 10 cents on milk if it meant it could go to drought-affected farmers in the Eastern States?
An overwhelming number of Esperance people would according to a poll conducted by Triple M on Facebook. 250 participants said they would be happy with a dairy levy used to help farmers, nearly 95% of the survey. The main concerns raised was that that money wouldn’t make its desired target, be it the struggling farmers, still the generous sentiment remained.
It comes as the Queensland Dairy Organisation, a dairy industry lobby group, have begun asking consumers in an online petition if they would feel comfortable with a 10 cent increase to support farmers. The appeal also stipulated that processors like Parmalat, Norco and Lion guarantee that all of the proceeds would be returned to farmers.
The Facebook poll is still running and will continue until the end of this weekend (September 9) and can be found at the Triple M Esperance page. More discussion on the issue and the proposal is at the Sean for Breakfast Catch Up podcast below.
