Arrest made over Tweed bashing

An arrest has been made over a brutal bashing in Tweed Heads South, that left an elderly man with significant facial injuries.

The 69-year-old was sitting in his parked car on Minjungbal Dr on Monday night, when he was approached by a man, who asked him if he had any cigarettes.

When the older man said he didn't have any he was allegedly punched in the face multiple time through the open car window.

The attacker ran off when a passer-by intervened.

The injured man then drove himself to a nearby service station and called police.

They arrested a 37-year-old man at Tweed Heads South on Tuesday afternoon.

He was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was due in Murwillumbah Local Court on Wednesday.
