UPDATE: A driver has died following a dramatic crash on the Pacific Motorway at Tweed Heads South.
The 22-year-old passed away in Tweed Heads Hospital after suffering critical injuries, when his Mazda hatch wrapped itself around a tree on the median strip sometime around 10pm on Thursday.
Tweed Byron police have now launched a critical incident investigation, claiming they witnessed the vehicle travelling at high speed on the M1 just before 9.30pm.
Officers attempted to pursue but gave up a short time later.
EARLIER: A man is fighting for life following a horrific crash at Tweed Heads South last night.
Police and emergency services were called to the scene on the Pacific Motorway just after 10pm on Thursday, where the 25-year-old's car had come off the road and slammed into a tree on the median strip.
He had to be freed from the wreckage, before being transported to Tweed Heads Hospital in a critical condition.
It came after a motorcyclist was seriously injured in a collision with a car at Palm Beach just an hour earlier.
The man in his 20s is believed to have collided with the vehicle at the corner of Palm Beach Avenue and Cypress Terrace just before 9pm.
He was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with a suspected spinal injury.
