Mayor backs Jones for Games Minister

Mayor Tom Tate wants to see Kate Jones back in charge of the Commonwealth Games portfolio.

Treasurer Curtis Pitt has stepped in as acting Minister for the games until a permanent replacement is found, after Stirling Hinchliffe resigned from the role on Monday.

Mr Hinchliffe took over the as Commonwealth Games Minister following a cabinet reshuffle in December 2015, taking the role off Ms Jones, who took the reigns from the LNP's Jann Stuckey when the government changed hands earlier that year.

Mr Tate said with the games just over a year away, there was no time to place an inexperienced Minister in the role.

"Let's put someone in who's already been there and that's the way we can make sure that the games run smoothly from here until the opening," he said.

Mr said he'll work with whoever is appointed, but always got along well with the current Education Minister.

"I'm biased towards Minister Kate Jones because when she was minister we got on very well, constantly on the phone".
