Police investigate suspicious blaze

Police are questioning a 30-year-old man following a suspicious house fire in Tanah Merah early this morning.

There was apparently smoke and flames coming from a bedroom on the ground floor of the two-storey home on Nandala Street when officers arrived at the scene shortly after midnight on Friday.

They burst inside and evacuated a 57-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman.

Luckily neither was hurt.

They officers tried to put the flames out themselves but fire-fighters had to be called in.

The fire was extinguished around 2am but not before causing extensive damage to a bedroom and smoke damage throughout the house.

A 30-year-old man was arrested nearby and was assisting police with their inquires. 

Police said initial investigations revealed the blaze may have been started as part of a domestic violence incident.
