Gold Coast beaches are off limits to swimmers this morning.
Big swells and strong winds have forced Surf Lifesavers to close beaches up and down the coast on Wednesday morning.
Life guard superintendent Peter Miller said the dangerous conditions were expected to worsen around lunchtime.
"As the tide runs out to a low just after 11:30 the waves will be dumping very heavily and big surges up the beach," he said.
Mr Miller said the rough surf was forecast to stick around, so beaches might not reopen until Thursday.
"It may drop off but we'll be monitoring it all day and we'll just take it on its merits as the day goes on."
He warned swimmers to stay out of the water and said the "advice for surfers is; if you're unsure, don't risk it because it is a very, very heavy swell."
