More than 35 Aboriginal leaders, industry and local government representatives met in Kalgoorlie this week to discuss ways to improve Aboriginal economic participation in the Goldfields.

The project follows a directive from the McGowan Government that the Kalgoorlie city centre project must be used to drive Aboriginal employment and training.

The meeting was a collaboration between the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission. Regional Development Trust chairperson Brendan Hammond chaired the workshop who hgelped drive change in the north of the State.

A core focus of the workshop was on opportunities created by the Kalgoorlie City Centre Revitalisation Project, an $8 million commitment by the State Government to transform the Kalgoorlie city centre.

The workshop resolved to establish an Aboriginal Economic Development Taskforce, charged with driving Aboriginal employment and contracting outcomes on the $8 million city centre project. The taskforce will convene its first meeting next week.
