On Saturday 23 June Shepparton and Mooroopna Football/Netball Clubs will battle it out at Deakin Reserve for the region’s inaugural Pride Cup.
A family day for locals and visitors alike including food, stalls and football/netball will see rival teams compete for the Pride Cup. Pride Cup celebrates diversity and inclusion in sport for the lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual and intersex (LGBTI) communities by tackling homophobia in Australian Rules Football.
- Saturday June 23 at Deakin Reserve
- entertainment, food and info stalls running all day from 10 AM.
- 1PM for the pre-game speeches
Local GV Pride Secretary, Damien Stevens, says, “The sports oval has historically been a scary place for LGBTI people, with homophobic language on the field often leaving us feeling unwelcome or having to remain in the closet. Pride Cup sends a clear message that LGBTI people and their skills/talents are valued in sport.”
What started out in 2014 as a celebration match between traditional rivals Yarra Glen and Yarra Junction has turned into a strong symbol for inclusion in Australia’s favourite sport right across Victoria. Now there are a range of Pride Cup games that are held throughout the state, including Shepparton.
Will Phillips, President Shepparton Football Netball Club says, “Sometimes actions speak louder than words. I see it as a great opportunity for our club to be involved in the GVL Pride Cup match in 2018. SFNC has a long and proud heritage and if our leadership can, in any way, raise awareness of the regions diversity and promote the LGBTI+ communities inclusion in our sport, then we will be supportive at all levels. The event itself will be a festival of football, netball and fun and we look forward to seeing as many people as possible at Deakin Reserve Shepparton on the 23rd June to celebrate diversity and inclusion in sport.”
Pride Cup was also the inspiration for the AFL Pride match.
Shepparton’s Pride Cup is proudly supported by Shepparton Football Netball Club, Goulburn Valley Pride Inc., ANZ Shepparton and Greater Shepparton’s LGBTI+ Community Alliance.
