District 23's fire danger period has kicked off this morning. It effects Benalla and Mansfield council areas, including Mount Buller and Mount Stirling. Operations Manager Stewart Krelstzheim says a deficit in rainfall across North East Victoria has made our forests dry and vulnerable.

Don't let mates drink and drown: that's the message being pushed by Royal Life Saving in the lead up to summer, stats showing almost 2 thousand men have lost their life this way over the past 10 years.

The figures across Victoria quite alarming; 275 deaths recorded, a high number of those being men in the 25 to 34 year old age bracket.

Royal Life Savings Craig Roberts says the numbers are quite alarming in that men with alcohol or drugs in their system make up a large number of those who are drowning across the country.

The Shepparton Council is continuing to push the message of composting and looking after the environment, gearing up to hand out purple compostable bags
The Council making inroads on the matter over the past few years, diverting around 15 thousand tonnes of garden and food waste from landfill.

Greater Shepparton Council Infrastructure Director Phil Hoare says having introduced extra green lid bins and kitchen caddies 2 years ago, it has helped ensure our landfills are not becoming overcrowded.
