This is how you rock Oztober!

Article heading image for Allan's Top 5 Great Aussie Tracks

We are in the middle of Oztober and as we celebrate all things Aussie music it got me thinking about what were a few of my favourite bands and songs. So in no particular order here are my top 5 Aussie tracks. I hope this list sparks up some memories and gets you pondering about your favourite Aussie hits.

1. Killing Heidi - Weir
One of the first concerts I went to featured this band and they were so cool to watch live. This song became a road trip anthem when I was in my teens and it just sums up what fun Aussie rock is all about. I remember when it came on at Rockit 99 (yes that was a real festival) the crowd would go from swaying nicely to moshing throughout the whole song. So please enjoy.

2. Bee Gees - I started a joke
Some songs take you straight back to your childhood, this is one of those for me. My Dad loved the Bee Gees and this song was one of his favourites so it became one of mine. As soon as it plays I get transported back in time to my Dad loading in a best of Bee Gees cassette tape and sitting in the lounge and just enjoying the great music.

3. The Living End - Prisoner of society
What was the first CD you ever bought? This was mine, The Living End. They were rebellious, they were cool, they had dyed hair and piercings and they were Australian. I can listen to that first album cover to cover any given day which is probably why I loved this bad so much.

4. Choirboys - Run to paradise
If you are looking to start your road trip off right then this is the perfect song. It just sounds Aussie and it feels like real genuine rock. I chatted to Mark Gable from the Chiorboys a few months ago according to him it is the greatest song ever written... he may of been joking but I will never truly know.

5. Powderfinger - My Happiness
Sometimes you hear a song and you're like holy moly that is my life right now at this moment. That is what My Happiness is to me. I was living in Broome while my wife lived in Perth. I would see her every 3rd week for a weekend for 6 months. The lyrics really spoke to me,

"So you come in and put your bags down
I know there's something in the air
How can I do this to you right now
If you're over there when I need you here"

It doesn't hurt that it is an amazing song as well

Bonus Track
John Farnham - You're the voice
Because why not!
