A flood Watch has been issued by the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, Tasmania for the Huon River.

The Bureau in Hobart issued the Flood at 12:34 pm EST on Wednesday 6 September 2017 as a "heads up" for possible future flooding and is NOT a Flood Warning.

In the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday, widespread rainfall totals of 5-25mm have been recorded in the Huon River catchment, with higher totals in excess of 40mm recorded at Warra.

A westerly flow persists over the State during Wednesday, bringing showers to the Huon catchment, following by a front on Thursday afternoon.

During Wednesday and Thursday rainfall totals of 20 to 30mm are likely with higher totals possible in elevated areas.

Snow accumulated over much of this area is expected to start to melt as the temperature warms gradually ahead of the front and will add to runoff over the next couple of days.

The Huon catchment is saturated and river rises have developed due to persistent showers this week. Snow melting and forecast rainfall will maintain high river levels with additional river rises possible on Thursday and Friday. Catchment specific warnings will be issued if and when required.

Strong and dangerous flows may be a hazard throughout the Huon River catchment for the next few days.
