Tasmania Police are investigating whether a 1984 yellow single cab Mazda Utility seized from a lake in Waverley is linked to the serious assault of a man who is currently in the ICU at the Launceston General Hospital.

Officials believe that they know the identity of the man who was found without a phone or wallet, however are awaiting confirmation.

Detective Inspector Phillippa Burk says the man will require facial surgery, after suffering fractures to both eye sockets, his nose and his ribs.

“The victim is still stable but remains sedated. Due to the injuries to his face he is going to require facial reconstruction surgery.”

“Police continue to seek assistance from any members of the public who may have seen this utility last evening between 10pm until 12.30am this morning. In particular, whether the utility may have been seen in the suburbs of Prospect, West Launceston, Invermay and Waverley.”

A man is in the ICU at the Launceston General Hospital after being found with serious head injuries at the intersection of the Tasman Highway and Naroo Street in Waverley at around 12.30 this morning.

Officials say the injuries are not life threatening and it’s believed he’s the victim of a serious assault.

The man suffered fractures to both eye sockets, his nose and his ribs.

Detective Inspector Philippa Burk has described the attack as “horrific” and says that further door knocking will be conducted in the area.

Police are also on the lookout for any CCTV footage which may assist in the investigation.

The man is yet to be identified and police are seeking public assistance in doing so.

He had no wallet or phone on the victim when he was found and Detective Inspector Burk says it’s a “highly unusual” investigation.

“There would be members out there that know; first of all they might be missing somebody that might be our victim and secondly, there would have to be people in the community that know the perpetrators in relation to this”.

The victim has been described as between 30 and 40 years old, fair skinned, 175cm to 179cm tall with Auburn receding hair, of medium build with manicured and very thin eyebrows.

Officials say he wasn't wearing any shoes when found this early this morning in jeans and a black “Tank Top"
