Monday 23rd October 

Conversational French

10:00am –12:00pm

It’s one of the key European romance languages and is widely spoken across many continents and islands as well.  Impress your friends and family with the perfect French for your café orders at home or abroad.  This is a great introductory session and will give you a chance to see if you’d like to learn more. All welcome.

All of the Tuesday public information sessions listed below will be held at the Mount Gambier Library.

Age Pension and Your Choices

9:30am – 10:30am

This session will be run by a Department of Human Services financial information service worker and will cover topics such as qualification for the pension, the claims process, income and assets work bonuses and concessions.

Understanding Retirement Income Streams

11:00am – 12:30pm

This session will explore what the various retirement income streams are, how they work, options available to people, human services assessments and tax assessments.

Accommodation Options in Retirement

2:00pm – 3:00pm

So you’re interested in a lifestyle adjustment – but confused by the options?  Learn what’s behind some of the options such as: downsizing, renting, entering a retirement village, reverse mortgages and granny flat options.

Understanding Aged Care Fees and Charges

3:30pm – 4:30pm

Topic information explained includes home care and residential care.  This workshop will look at case studies and will explore the questions "How much will things cost me?  Do I have to sell my home? How might my pension be affected?"

Science Session

Words Alive

10:00am – 12:00pm

Language is complex, fun, naughty and oh so nice when used to good effect! 

Join the U3A team and bring your words alive as they focus on "My relationship with….." 

That’s right, you get to fill in the blanks and have a lot of fun doing it.

Scrabble Session

1:30pm start (allow 2 to 3 hours)

Scramble the letters and scrabble the words together for a fun afternoon of creativity, spelling and outsmarting your opponents.  Scrabble is great for so many reasons, including keeping our brains healthy.

4:30pm – 6:30pm

Aussie Croquet provides both physical and mental exercise and great social interaction.  Come along and give it a go. All equipment will be provided. Flat soled shoes required. Cost: Gold Coin Donation Appreciated

Night Scenes: Through the Eyes of Seniors

7:30pm - 9:00 pm

Calling all budding photographers over 50 years of age.  Join us on this walk as we capture the City's lesser known dark side at night. Bring your smart phone or camera along, as we wander through town capturing our City at night.  Please wear good non-slip walking shoes.

No other booking required in advance.   Just register in person from 7:15pm for a 7:30pm start when we meet outside the Main Corner, 1 Bay Rd Mount Gambier.

Tell Us What Matters - State Election Conversations with COTA SA

10:00am – 12:00pm

COTA SA is the peak body for older people in our state run for and by senior South Australians. They advance the rights, interests and futures of Australians as we age. COTA is creating new images and expectations of our older years, boldly reframing the way we live.

Ageing in Australia is a time of possibility, opportunities and influence, so with a State election around the corner COTA SA invite seniors from across Mount Gambier to meet with them and have your say about what matters to you.  If you want to influence policy directions for the future then please meet the COTA team and have your say.

Fun Senior’s Art Class

10:00am – 11:30am

Unravel your Matisse and create a Kandinsky inspired art work to take home in this fun explorative workshop with Susan at the Library.  You’ll receive a guided lesson to create either a Matisse inspired collage or a Kandinsky inspired artwork to take home at the end of the session.

Matisse’s later years saw him carve organic shapes from paper with scissors, to create large scale installations. You’ll take inspiration from Matisse’s work in your own paper on canvas creation. Kandinsky, one of the leading abstract artists of the early 20th century developed his own language using line and colour. Susan will encourage you to abstract your initials and create shapes which when coloured and lined will create your own masterpiece.

Movie Club – U3A Film Feature – Lion.

1:30pm – (allow 3 hours including coffee afterwards)

Lion has received rave reviews wherever it has screened across the globe.  This really is a must see film experience and is enhanced by the shared experience.  BYO tissues and money for a coffee at the Bookmark Café  afterwards. Come along to the U3A Movie Club and meet others and for this important film lovers experience.

Mount Gambier Seniors ZestFest Highlight Event!

60+ Moments - ZestFest Outdoor Large Scale Public Building Photography Projections

7:30pm for a 7:45pm start – 9:30pm

Please join us for this special one night only event featuring large scale building projections onto the front of the Main Corner after sunset.

Leading Australian arts company Illuminart, have been working with local’s aged 50 and over who have been photographing what gives their life Zest.  The roads surrounding the Main Corner will be closed while the projection is on. 

Enjoy a night out by joining us after sunset for this very special event.

The Riddoch Gallery – Saturday night tours

While the 60+ Moments projections are on, the Riddoch Gallery will also be open with special tours of their latest exhibitions.  The public are invited to join them and experience the future tech of augmented reality for themselves.

Mah Jong

If you haven’t played Mah Jong yet this is a perfect opportunity to experience the delights of this much loved tile based game.   With its roots in China’s Qing dynasty this is a game of skill, enhanced by the tactile qualities of the tiles.

 Aged Care – What you should know

In the lead up to ZestFest – Boandik Lodge is hosting pop-up information sessions focusing on staying well and informing people what they should know about aged care. These succinct sessions will occur at The Marketplace this Friday 13th October between 10:00am to 2:00pm and at Mount Gambier Central on Thursday 19th October from 10:00am.
