Bans on smoking in outdoor dining areas

New laws for Smokers across the border

New laws come into effect for smokers across the border today, banning smoking in outdoor dining areas across Victoria.

The ban covers all restaurants, cafes, take-away shops and licenced premises with beer gardens, courtyards, and footpath dining where food, other than snacks are served.

Chief Preventative Health Officer for the Department of Health and Human Services Dr Bruce Bolam says the law will hopefully break a harmful trend, “But we also know and research is very clear on this that bans of this type also send a very important message that smoking really should be off the menu.

“De-normalisation of smoking more broadly saves a lot of lives by encouraging kids to stay away from smokes and that you can have a good time you can go out and have something to eat and you don’t need to be exposed to or participate in smoking.”
