High powered boats are being warned

Watch out for the whales!

The State Government Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources has put out the call to fisherman and boating parties to keep their distance from whales when on the water.

The whales are going through annual migration with the department getting reports of boats and paddle boarders getting too close to the animals.

High-powered boats and jet skis are not allowed closer than 300 metres to a whale with paddle boarders and other conventional vessels to be more than 100 metres away.

Animal Welfare Manager Deb Kelly says we have to keep in mind that they aren't always peaceful, as they can actually be a large threat to boats and people on board.
