As fires continue to blaze around Mackay authorities are asking residents to be prepared. Emergency crews are working out new containment lines for a fire at Dows Creek. The fire started Sunday but reignited yesterday morning with crews working throughout the day to keep neighboring properties safe. Crews also remain on scene at a fire in Septimus. While Mackay has been in high fire danger for several days, storms are hopefully going to ease the pressure

Mackay Conservation Group has won a National Environmental Award. Presented with the 2018 Community Environment Prize by the Bob Brown Foundation in Hobart yesterday. The award was given for the groups ongoing work to protect the environment locally and on a global scale

 

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has appointed a new Chairperson. Dr. Ian Poiner has been assigned under the new Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Board arrangements which came into effect yesterday. Poiner is a respected marine scientist with international science credentials and board leadership experience

 

Sugar Research Australia has announced two new board members and the re-election of two directors. Peter Russo and Sam Bonnano will join the board alongside existing directors Dr. Ron Swindells, Steve Guazzo, Dr. Helen Garnett, Lindy Hyam and Dr. Guy Roth

CQ UNI Mackay is hosting female sporting greats at a forum tomorrow. The October sports industry forum focuses on women in sport with special guests Tracey Belbin, Renae Kunst, and Danae Gardner

 

Mackay's Todd Blanchfield has gotten the call up for the Australian Boomers Squad. Competing in the fifth window of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in Melbourne. The Boomers will be able to secure their place at the 2019 World Cup if they succeed in the next two games
