There's not much left of a home on Johnson Street in West Mackay after a fire ripped through. Firies are being thanked for the quick response as they were able to save two neighbouring homes. It's believed to have started i a shed at around a quarter to 1 yesterday afternoon. The home owner Sonia Ball is thanking emergency services and is relieved no one is hurt.

A woman is facing seven charges following a police chase from Mackay to Townsville. The 27 year old allegedly managing to evade police in Mackay and Bowen on Wednesday. Police allege she was finally stopped and arrested at a roadblock at Killymoon Creek. She fronted court yesterday but is due back in court in March.

Two cane growers are hoping to see the Mackay Sugar Board resign. Noel Durnsford and Russell O’Neil are recruiting farmers who would be willing to take on board positions. They say following the dismal 2016 crushing season -- action needs to be taken. The pair’s telling the Mercury if the board refused to step down -- they're ready to force them out.

Nominations for the Women Who Make Us Proud Awards are now open. Deputy Mayor Amanda Camm says they're an opportunity to showcase the hard work of local women across our region.

Spurred on by a Championship win Mackay’s Riley James is aiming to make it into the Queensland Under 17's softball side. It comes after he took home a winners medal in the Under 15's Australian Championship recently. He says he knows he has to work on a few things before the Under 17 trials later in the year.

There's no stopping Brothers Junior Rugby League player Rayden Burns. He's part of the Queensland Murri Under 16's Squad that's set to take on a New South Wales Koori side next month. Burns will first head to a training camp in Newcastle before the February 9th match. It'll be the curtain-raiser to the Redfern All Blacks and Cherbourg Hornets game.
