Rio-Tinto's Hail Creek Mine has been found in breach of the Fair Work Act. It was claimed that the mine reduced shift lengths by half an hour dropping the weekly hours under 48. The mine saying this reduced the roster allowance payments workers were entitled to under their contracts. While the Federal Justice agreed the mine was in breach he says it was not a deliberate act

 

The Mackay Council is moving forward with plans to improve Eton water. It is calling for tenders to construct a new treatment system. The upgrades will reduce the selenium levels and hardness of the town's water supply. Tender documents are available through the Council website until March 20

Latest ABS figures show Mackay has the lowest unemployment rate outside inner Brisbane. In the past month alone the city has seen the creation of some 700 new jobs. 

Mackay was also found to have the highest participation rate in the state demonstrating confidence in the local community. 

Mackay Tourism are looking for young people to help showcase the region. It's a part of the plan to get the younger generation assisting with the new mobile visitor information centre trailer. General Manager Tas Webber says lots of tourists come to town for one off events.

Mackay has successfully hosted the biggest bowls comp on its 2018 calendar. The two-day Bushman's Bread Under the Shed Comp saw teams from Mackay, Bowen, Townsville and Rockhampton battle it out. Third prize went to went to a family team from North Mackay, second was won by a South Mackay and Sarina team. While the top prize went to a team from Townsville

 

Mackay Brothers have defeated the South Sharks. They faced off in an a-grade rugby trial match up Saturday night. The final score was 26 - 12
