A father and son are safe and sound after their boat sunk off Mackay. It happened near Bailey Island at around 6:30am with a passing vessel arriving just in time. It's understood their boat spilt up the middle and sunk after hitting a submerged log.

Temps are set to hit 36 degrees in Mackay today. The heatwave is continuing to sweep across the state with six Queensland towns recording their hottest temperatures in history yesterday. While one local forecaster says with perfect conditions we could beat Mackay’s February record of 37.3 degrees.

More court action could be on the way for Adani's Carmichael mine 500klms west of Mackay. The Wangan and Jagalingou Traditional Owners Council claim Adani's Indigenous Land Use Agreement is illegitimate. They're asking the Federal Court to knock out Adani’s claim that it has the consent of the Traditional Owners for the proposed mine in the Galilee Basin. While the premier is being pushed to use her powers with the project deemed 'critical infrastructure.

Mackay's waterways are thriving. Fisheries biologist Matt Moore says their recently constructed fishways are proving to be a success.

Artspace Mackay is getting a revamp. It'll close for a month from the 20th of February. Community Lifestyle Manager Lawrence Booth says the refurb won’t just be about putting in some new carpet and a new coat of paint

LOCAL SPORT

The Cowboys managed the rope the Roosters into line in Mackay at the weekend. The North Queensland side finishing up with a thrilling one-point win over the Sydney boys in the pre-season trial match. Mackay’s Kalyn Ponga impressing crowds in the second half.

Queensland Firebirds Romelda Aiken is impressed with our junior netballers. She held a clinic on Saturday and says they were above her expectations for their age group and how advanced they were.
