We're one step closer to seeing a planned multi-million dollar redevelopment at Caneland Central in Mackay. Lend lease over the moon with the Mackay Council give their extension the tick of approval. The plans include a cinema, with five theatres and one Vmax theatre as well as seven restaurants and undercover parking. While they still have to secure investment to ensure the redevelopment is a sound business decision.

Meanwhile Kmart at Mount Pleasant's getting a facelift. The refit will start on May one and will finish up on June the 15th.

Police are promising to be out in force around Mackay schools today. It's back to school for many kids across the region and officers will be on hand to make sure motorists are sticking to the reduced speed limits Senior Sergeant Richard Turner says parking is always a big issue as well.

Ergon Energy will interrupt power to a number of areas in the Whitsundays this week. They're making emergency repairs to their network to replace the temporary ones done following Cyclone Debbie. There are planned interruptions in the Paluma and Pringle Roads and Parkland, Bellavista and Mountainview Drives areas from 8:30 till 4:30 today.

The shark control nets and drum lines off Mackay are in the spotlight. Humane Society International warning authorities the drumlines will continue to have lethal impacts on threatened species. Crocodiles are being caught in the nets in Mackay but most commonly it's the cownose ray. While no loggerhead turtles have been caught in the local program in the past five years.

LOCAL SPORT

The Mackay Cutters are nursing a loss in Round seven of the Q Cup. Our guys going down 42 points to 24 to the South’s Logan Magpies on Sunday afternoon. Coach Steve Sheppard says for the first 60 minutes they played well.

The Mid North Tennis Championship is over in Mackay with Mitchell Wilson and Tenika McGiffin taking out the AMT open age events. More than 170 tennis players traveling from all over the state to take part.
