Mackay Canegrowers are still facing uncertainty ahead of the 2017 crush with Labor blocking the LNP’s sugar legislation overnight. LNP Leader Tim Nicholls says the laws would have ended the stalemate over sugar marketing. While Agriculture Minister Bill Byrne says this is a good result and the focus now switches to mediation brokered and funded by the Palaszczuk Government as Wilmar and QSL seek to reach an agreement.

Two Mackay locals are diagnosed with cancer every day. That’s according to the latest stats from the Cancer Council's Cancer Research Centre. Katie Clift from the Cancer Council says about 750 locals are diagnosed with cancer every year.

Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson says we need to work on diversifying industry instead of following the FIFO craze. While he recognises the frustration many are feeling after the mining downturn he tells the Mercury they're supporting the GW3 group. They're working on an economic development strategy which plays to the regions strengths in the mining services sector.

Works getting underway this week on an upgrade at the intersection of Glenella-Richmond and Mackay-Habana roads. It'll cost two-point-two million dollars and is in a bid to improve safety and reduce the number of crashes on our roads.

A wet Summer has wrapped up in the Tropics but it looks like those conditions are starting to drop off. A record was broken in Mackay with the Highest Summer Daily minimum temperature coming in at 27.4 degrees. Climatologist Jeff Sabburg says the City had above average rainfall bucking trends seen in other parts of the State.

LOCAL SPORT

The AFLQ Mackay draw is out. The season that’s less than a month away will kick off with some rival matches. The New Mackay City Hawks women's team will be taking on the North Mackay Saints.

Sarina Golf Club's Les Smith is one to watch out for after he took out the win in the first Monthly Medal in the B-Grade at the weekend. The 82 year old was up against about 50 men.
